Church leaders must stop extorting congregations

Church offering

In every corner of the country, churches demonstrate an unparalleled ability to extract funds—even from the most financially strained individuals.

Extortion • The way clerics are going around collecting alms and cash from the increasingly impoverished faithful is akin to milking an emaciated cow, says Alex Kiptanui. “The men and women of God are squeezing out every remaining penny from their congregations for never-ending projects.” How he wishes God could now come down and save his children. Indiscipline • While the crackdown by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on speeding motorists is laudable, Dr Patrick Mbataru would like to see more done to enhance road safety. The NTSA patrol and inspection team, he demands, “should also come down heavily on the drivers guilty of lane indiscipline, especially on the dual carriageways”. His contact is [email protected].

Streetlights • Outer Ring Road in Nairobi’s Eastlands is “very dark at night as streetlights are either not working or non-existent on some long stretches”, says Fredrick Njoka. Governor Johnson Sakaja, as the city county government’s top boss, Fredrick adds, should get his team to urgently address the issue. “Over to you, Bwana Governor Sakaja!” His email address is [email protected].

Noisy • Matatus are notorious for noise pollution countrywide, but one of the worst culprits plies a popular route in Nairobi, says Mulugheta Berhe. “This vehicle has a very noisy exhaust pipe, which sounds like a siren. People living on both sides of the road are having sleepless nights late in the night and at dawn. Can the traffic police chief, please, restore order?” His contact is [email protected].

Champions • The English Premier League can now be called for Liverpool, who need only one win to seal the victory and yet they still have several matches to go, says Jim Okwako. “Defending champs Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has thrown in the towel, but he’s now animatedly fighting for a top four place for a European Championship slot. But Arsenal fans will have to wait much longer.”

Have a thrilling day, won’t you!
