Moi grandson Collins Kibet to spend the weekend in police cells after re-arrest

Mr Collins Kibet at the Nakuru Law Court on September 19, 2024.
What you need to know:
- Senior Resident Magistrate Vincent Adet directed that Kibet continue being held at Nakuru Central Police Station until Monday.
- The arrest orders were issued after Mr Kibet failed to appear before the court to show cause why he had not supported his two children.
Former President Daniel Arap Moi's grandson Collins Kibet will have to spend three more nights in cold cells before the court decides on his fate.
This is after Senior Resident Magistrate Vincent Adet failed to rule on his case when he was produced before the court.
Mr Kibet, who is facing a contempt of court suit, was arrested on Thursday evening pursuant to a warrant of arrest that was issued by the court on May 8.
Mr Adet declined to rule on the case, which has been before a different magistrate who is currently away.
He directed that Kibet continue being held at Nakuru Central Police Station until Monday, when he shall be produced before the trial magistrate, Kipkurui Kibelion.
The arrest orders were issued after Mr Kibet failed to appear before the court to show cause why he had not supported his two children as earlier ordered.
"This court is not familiar with the matter. The contemnor will have to remain in police custody until Friday when the trial magistrate will be present," ruled Mr Adet.
In the orders issued by Principal Magistrate Kipkurui Kibelion on February 13, the court directed Mr Kibet to pay school fees for one minor at their current school while facilitating the other child to enroll at a school in Kabarak. This was to be done at the beginning of the second term.
He further directed Mr Kibet to enroll both children in the Kabarak Health Care Centre medical scheme and to provide a medical cover that would cater to the minors outside Kabarak within three months.
However, Elizabeth Wangare, the lawyer representing Mr Kibet’s ex-wife, Gladys Jeruto Tagi, told the court on Thursday that the Moi scion had complied with neither of the orders.
Ms Wangare indicated that efforts to reach out to his lawyers to push for compliance were futile, as none was responding to her correspondence. This is the second time Mr Kibet is being arrested for contempt.
He was first arrested on September 18 last year before he was produced before the court and sentenced to a month in prison. He was, however, released a week later after his lawyers proved that he had not been served with the orders.
While releasing him, the court warned him against disobeying court orders in the future. Three months later, Mr Kibet went underground, and even his advocates could not reach him.
His ex-wife, Gladys Jeruto, through her lawyer Elizabeth Wangare, applied for a warrant of arrest to be issued against him for contempt of court.
On Thursday, Mr Kibet was arrested in Rongai before he was ferried to Nakuru, where he was locked up at the Central Police Station. The case will be mentioned on Monday.
