A former presidential guard is among the seven police officers under investigation for the fatal shooting of a 45-year-old sand harvester, Daniel Nderitu Mwangi, in Nakuru County.

Senior Sergeant Zicasio Njue, who once served as a bodyguard to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, is one of the officers detained following a confrontation on June 9 between police and residents of London Ward in Nakuru West Sub-county.

The altercation reportedly sparked by bribery claims turned deadly when Mr Nderitu was allegedly shot as police pursued a suspected drug dealer.

He sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Nakuru County Teaching and Referral Hospital.

A postmortem confirmed that he died from a single bullet wound.

Following the incident, 10 police officers were arrested and questioned by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Seven of them, Senior Sergeant Njue, Corporals Eric Mwangi and John Kihara, and Constables Naftali Gitonga, Ephantus Njeru, Marceler Tanui and Isaac Anampiu were arraigned in court on June 11.

Prosecution counsel Emma Okok requested the court to allow continued detention of the officers for seven more days to complete investigations.

She told the court that detectives were still recording statements from key witnesses, awaiting a ballistic report from the Government Chemist, and assessing the security concerns surrounding the suspects.

On June 18, the court granted the request and ordered the officers to be held at Menengai Police Station in Rongai until June 24, 2025, when the case will be mentioned.

Njue joined the National Police Service in 2005 as part of the General Service Unit. After President Kenyatta was elected, Njue was seconded to the Presidential Escort Unit, an elite police division responsible for protecting senior government officials.

He served in this role for several years before being transferred to Nakuru Central Police Station in 2023.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) has since taken over the investigation into the killing of Nderitu.
