Nyandarua County has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Beth Wahito, a nominated Member of the County Assembly (MCA).

Ms Wahito died in a road accident on Saturday night on the busy Nairobi–Nakuru highway.

According to Nyandarua County Speaker Wachira Waiganjo, Ms Wahito was returning home from Naivasha, where she had attended a meeting about the upcoming county budget.

He explained that the meeting had ended at around 9 pm, but that Ms Wahito and some other committee members stayed behind to discuss departmental issues. She reportedly left the hotel shortly before midnight.

"The accident occurred at a junction connecting Naivasha town to her Njabini-Kiburu ward. We are deeply saddened by her death. She was one of our best-performing MCAs, always going the extra mile to serve her constituents," the Speaker said during a phone interview.

Ms Wahito had previously served as a councillor on the now defunct Nyandarua County Council. She was also the Nyandarua County Chairperson for Narc-Kenya before joining UDA in the last general election, which resulted in her nomination.

Until her death, she was vice chairperson of the County Assembly’s Health Services Committee and a member of several other committees.

According to the Speaker, Ms Wahito's car was hit by a bus heading towards Nakuru City. The mangled wreckage was towed to Naivasha Police Station, while her body was taken to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary.

Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha described the late MCA as humble, hardworking and dependable.

Deputy Majority Leader Mwangi Kagwe (MCA for Ndaragua Central) expressed his shock at the news, describing Wahito as an active and insightful participant at the Naivasha budget forum.

“She was jovial and contributed meaningfully to nearly every discussion point. We have lost a very bright, informed and focused leader,” he said.
