Kauwri, a Kenyan jewellery brand launched in August 2023, represents the intersection of minimalist design and cultural storytelling. Under creative director Victor Wathiong'o's vision, each handcrafted piece showcases Kenya's rich heritage through bold, experimental aesthetics.
The brand stands on three pillars: exceptional craftsmanship, environmental consciousness, and equitable income for artisans. Targeting discerning women aged 25-65, Kauwri's collections appeals to those who seek distinctive jewellery that carries both artistic value and cultural significance. The brand's commitment to sustainability and fair labour practices resonates with conscious consumers who appreciate the authenticity of handmade craftsmanship.

Does nature have a major impact on your design process?
Nature plays a significant role in Kauwri’s design process, with inspiration drawn from cowries, shells, and the natural world. This is reflected in the brand’s two distinct collections:
The Celestial Collection, where celestial elements are combined with the cowrie shell to create pieces that are both symbolic and timeless.
The Nam Ataro Collection, an ode to the sea and our artisans’ of Dholuo heritage. The collection features designs that capture the essence of ocean life and its ever-changing beauty.

How do you keep your jewellery designs fresh and relevant with each new collection you create?
At Kauwri, the journey to every collection begins with a story. From ideating themes and curating mood boards to researching market trends and target audience preferences, each step in the design process is intentional. The resulting Jewelry resonates with wearers seeking both style and substance.
What is the step-by-step care routine for cowries and brass jewellery?
Keeping It Dry. Avoid exposing your jewellery to water, including showers, swimming pools, and sweat during intense activities, and refrain from spraying perfumes, lotions, or other cosmetics directly on your jewellery.
Proper Storage. When not in use, store each piece in a dry place, ideally in a soft pouch or jewellery box to protect it from air, dust, and scratches.
Gentle Care By Wiping. After wearing your jewellery, gently clean it with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove any oils or residue and maintain its shine.
Avoid Abrasives. Do not use harsh chemicals, abrasive cloths, or cleaning agents, as they may damage the plating or the brass underneath.
Professional Care. When necessary, consider Kauwri’s replating services for long-lasting durability, especially if the piece no longer retains its original lustre after prolonged use.

Which African and international jewellery brand would you love to Collaborate with for a collection?
African Brand from Cote D’Ivore, Lafalaise Dion.
Renowned as the "Queen of Cowries," The Ivorian Brand Lafalaise Dion transforms cowrie shells into striking, wearable art celebrating African heritage. Her creative use of cowries aligns seamlessly with Kauwri’s ethos, making her an ideal collaborator for a collection that pushes the boundaries of cowrie-inspired design while honouring their cultural significance.
International French Brand, Hugo Kreit.
With their ingenious and experimental approach to jewellery design, a collaboration with the French Brand Hugo Kreit would allow Kauwri to explore avant-garde aesthetics while staying true to its nature-inspired roots. Together, the brands could create bold, unconventional pieces that redefine contemporary jewellery.
What milestones does the brand aim to achieve in the next two years?
I envision Kauwri expanding globally, with our jewellery stocked in concept stores across Europe, South America, the Far East, North America, and Africa. I aim to grow our team, establishing Kauwri as a fully-fledged company with enhanced capacity and innovation. Impacting the local community is key, as I plan to collaborate with women artisans, providing training and sustainable opportunities. Additionally, I intend to focus on the wholesale market, creating more accessibility for the brand to a broader audience.
