Cyprus has officially opened its High Commission in Nairobi, coinciding with the signing of a memorandum of understanding on political and diplomatic consultations with Kenya.

Musalia Mudavadi, the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, who attended the inauguration with visiting Cypriot counterpart Constantinos Kombos, said the mission will help strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

“This gesture underscores our collective resolve to unlock new opportunities for economic growth, tackle shared challenges and foster meaningful people-to-people connections, building on the framework of the political cooperation agreement we signed earlier today,” he said on Monday.

The ministers recognised the untapped potential of Kenya–Cyprus bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to achieving tangible outcomes for the benefit of citizens of both countries.

“We held lengthy discussions on the prospect of further cooperation in agriculture and pledged to strengthen collaboration with the aim of boosting Kenya’s exports to Europe,” said Mudavadi.

“Kenya welcomes the growing partnership with Cyprus, especially in the education sector. We have agreed to expand our collaboration on scholarships and capacity-building programmes for Kenyans to improve their employability and address sector-specific challenges,” he added.

Kenya and Cyprus said they will deepen their cooperation in the maritime, blue economy and shipping sectors as they also target to boost each other’s tourism numbers. Kenya is leveraging its substantial rebound in 2024, when international arrivals exceeded 2.4 million, with earnings projected at ($3.5 billion) Sh452.20 billion — a 19.79 percent increase.

“We have also discussed the prospect of a comprehensive framework on labour mobility to streamline access to employment opportunities for young people in Kenya and Cyprus,” said Kombos, who praised Kenya’s conducive and welcoming environment for diplomacy. He noted that Nairobi continues to cement its place as a leading regional hub for international engagement and business.

Cyprus is the latest country to open an embassy in Nairobi after Azerbaijan opened its mission in Nairobi in June.

Kenya said Cyprus has agreed to support the Economic Partnership Agreement Nairobi has with the European Union, which Cyprus is a member of and will assume the EU Council’s rotational presidency in 2026.
