NMG launches ‘CBE Connect’ pullout for schools

Nation Media Group (NMG) on Friday officially unveiled the CBE Connect pullout, the newest product in the Newspapers in Education (NiE) programme that will be published in the Daily Nation every Thursday.
The launch ceremony took place at Kariobangi North Comprehensive School in Nairobi. The new insert has content tailored to meet the learning needs of learners in primary and junior school under the curriculum based education (CBE).
In attendance were officials from the Nation Media Group, Mhasibu DT Sacco, who sponsor some schools in NiE, teachers and learners from the school.
"We are extremely excited about this new product which is part of our long tradition of putting education at the centre of our content agenda. CBE Connect is our answer to the changing realities in the knowledge economy in Kenya and around the world. The product is executed with the same rigour that has defined our content over the years, and it will, no doubt, give an edge to our young readers, as they go through primary and junior schools,” said NMG Editor-in-Chief Joe Ageyo.
In his remarks, NMG’s head of Circulation Department John Wanjohi said the pullout seeks to empower teachers, learners and also act as a teaching aid.
Selection of career pathways
"CBE Connect provides content between grades one and nine, model assessment papers and monthly Essay Writing Competition, with cash awards,” he said.
Mr Wanjohi observed that the magazine carries a section to guide learners in junior school prepare for selection of career pathways before transiting to Grade 10 (senior school).
The CEO of Mhasibu DT Sacco Eunice Kanyi said the organisation believes in empowering learners especially through education.
According to her the sacco decided to sponsor Kariobangi North Comprehensive school having marked a tremendous improvement in co-curricular activities and studies since the year 2022, when the programme was first launched at the institution. So far the Sacco has sponsored three junior school and two secondary schools.

Motivate future leaders
“CBE Connect is tailored to foster self-expression and motivate future leaders in various aspects of life,” he said.

The head teacher of Kariobangi North Comprehensive school, Jackline Walala, the noted that the school has a population of about 1,400 pupils. She added that since the NiE programme was introduced in the school in 2022, it has generally improved sports, writing, library lessons and reading of story books.
“Learners are organised in such a way that with support of English and Kiswahili teachers, the pupils read in groups during class time. Additionally, the newspapers are used as valuable resource to enrich routine learning schedule stipulated by the school calendar,” she said.
Brighton Barnabas who is in Grade 9 added that they receive the newspapers from Monday to Thursday.
“We familiarise with current issues, offering entertainment in sports arts, diverse cultures and general knowledge,” he said.
