What you need to know:

  • Despite the loss, Kayole Starlets coach Mary Adhiambo, a former Kenya international, remained positive.
  • “Despite the loss, we picked a lot of positives and we will work on them as we prepare for the league next season,” she said.

Football Kenya Federation Women Premier League (FKF-WPL) defending champions Kenya Police Bullets and Zetech Sparks on Sunday secured spots in the quarter-finals of the fourth edition of the FKF Women's Cup, slated for May 31.

They join holders Ulinzi Starlets , Vihiga Queens, Kibera Soccer Women, Trinity Starlets, and Bungoma Queens, who all progressed on Saturday.

National Women's Super League side, Eldoret Falcons, are the only lower-tier team left in the tournament after edging out Kisii Queens 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regular time at Sameta Grounds in Kisii County.

At Ruaraka Grounds in Nairobi, Bullets swept aside Milima Queens of the Regional League 3-0. Midfielder Lucy Kwekwe opened the scoring in the 30th minute, before striker Rebecca Okwaro doubled the lead in the 50th minute.

Substitute Linda Kihara sealed the victory in the 75th minute, just five minutes after coming on for winger Emily Morang’a.

In the other fixture at the same venue, Zetech Sparks downed newly promoted Women’s Premier League side, Kayole Starlets 2-0, with midfielders Monalisa Anyango and Christine Awuor scoring a goal each.

After the match, Sparks head coach Hariet Fakhir — only the second female coach in the FKF-WPL alongside Bullets’ Beldine Odemba — acknowledged the team’s improvement in the second half.

“We played well in the second half, improving after a first half where we didn't execute our plans. Ahead of the match, the girls were unconscious because of the social media hype. We play Bullets next, which is always a tough match,” said Fakhir.

Interestingly, Sparks have not lost to Bullets in the league this season — having won 4-3 in the first leg and drawn 1-1 in the return leg.

Despite the loss, Kayole Starlets coach Mary Adhiambo, a former Kenya international, remained positive.

“Despite the loss, we picked a lot of positives and we will work on them as we prepare for the league next season,” she said.
