What you need to know:

  • Only a few Leopards fans turned up for the game as many made good their threat of boycotting showing their displeasure of the contest being staged outside Nairobi.
  • Both teams battled to a barren draw in the first leg of the ‘Mashemeji’ derby at Nyayo National Stadium on March 30.

Gor Mahia’s hopes of defending their Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL) title diminished further on Monday after they settled for a 1-1 draw with their bitter-rivals AFC Leopards at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County.

The 12,000-capacity Raila Odinga Stadium was fully packed in the match which marked the first-ever ‘Mashemeji’ derby to be played in Homa Bay.

Midfielder Austin Odhiambo fired Gor ahead with a 31st minute strike, but forward Brian Wanyama equalised for Leopards in the 49th minute.

Following the draw, FKF-PL leaders Kenya Police now need just a draw against Shabana to bag their maiden top-flight league title.

After 32 matches, Police top the standings with 61 points, while Gor are second with 55 points from the same number of matches.

Gor can only lift the title if Police fall to Shabana on June 11 and they beat the law enforcers in the season finale on June 15.

In Homa Bay Gor, Odhiambo received the ball outside the box to fire a low shot past Ingwe custodian Levis Opiyo

The custodian has always been on the receiving end for being erratic in past derbies. This was Odhiambo's 10th  goal of the season.

Leopards restored parity when Wanyama fired past Gad Mathews after K’Ogalo defenders failed to clear a long ball at the heart of the defence.
