FKF-PL: Gor’s title hopes dented by lowly City Stars

Gor Mahia's Austin Odhiambo (left) and teammate Alpha Onyango vie for the ball with Nairobi City Stars' Kelvin Juma during their FKF Premier League match on May 15, 2025 at Dandora Stadium.

What you need to know:

  • Following the defeat, Gor Mahia remain third on the table with 53 points from 30 matches. Tusker are second with 55 points from 31 games, while Kenya Police lead the standings with 58 points from the same number of matches.
  • The result was a major boost for City Stars, who moved off the bottom of the table to 17th place with 30 points. Bidco United now occupy last place.

The 2024/25 Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL) title race has been thrown wide open after all three title contenders—Kenya Police, Tusker, and Gor Mahia—lost their respective Round 31 matches.

On Thursday, reigning champions Gor Mahia squandered a golden opportunity to close the gap at the top following a shock 2-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Nairobi City Stars.

With league leaders Kenya Police and second-placed Tusker having lost their matches on Wednesday, Gor had a chance to reduce the gap to just two points—with a game in hand.

However, the 21-time champions left their supporters in disbelief as first-half goals from Hansel Ochieng and Vincent Owino condemned them to their seventh loss of the season.

Striker Benson Omala netted Gor’s consolation goal.

Following the defeat, Gor Mahia remain third with 53 points from 30 matches. Tusker stay second with 55 points from 31 matches, while Police top the standings with 58 points from the same number of games.

City Stars, meanwhile, celebrated only their seventh win of the season, which lifted them from the bottom to 17th place with 30 points. Bidco United dropped to last place with 29 points.

On Wednesday, Kenya Police failed to stretch their lead at the top after a 2-1 loss to Kakamega Homeboyz at Mumias Sports Complex. Tusker also faltered, going down 2-0 to FC Talanta at Dandora Stadium.

Against Gor, Ochieng opened the scoring for City Stars just four minutes in—capitalising on confusion in the Gor defence, who believed he was offside. Omala equalised six minutes later, but Owino restored the visitors’ lead in the 17th minute from the penalty spot.

Gor launched a spirited second-half push but failed to find the equaliser. The defeat offers a reprieve to Police and Tusker, who remain in contention for the title despite their setbacks.

Police, chasing their maiden FKF-PL crown, have remaining fixtures against FC Talanta, Shabana, and Gor Mahia in the second leg.

Tusker, seeking to reclaim the title last won in 2021, will face Sofapaka, Kariobangi Sharks, and Homeboyz.

Gor Mahia still have challenging fixtures ahead against arch-rivals AFC Leopards, Murang’a Seal, Ulinzi Stars, and Police.

With the season approaching its climax, the relegation battle is equally fierce. Fifteenth-placed Mara Sugar and 16th-placed Murang’a Seal both have 32 points, while City Stars and Bidco are in 17th and 18th place with 30 and 29 points respectively.

Thursday's Results

Gor Mahia 1–2 Nairobi City Stars
