  • “The players are motivated by the prospect of earning after each win. As a coach, my goal is to win the title again.”

The fourth edition of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women’s Cup kicks off this weekend with a record 32 teams and a significant boost in sponsorship and player incentives.

For the first time, the tournament has attracted an official sponsor, with betting firm betPawa committing Sh4.3 million in bonuses through its Locker Room Bonus initiative. Under the scheme, each match-day winning team will see 23 players and three technical staff get Sh3,300.

The tournament draw was held on Tuesday at Desert Grounds in Kamukunji, Nairobi, marking a major milestone for the growing women’s competition.

FKF president Hussein Mohammed hailed the partnership as transformative.

“This collaboration with betPawa is a game-changer for the FKF Women’s Cup. The Locker Room Bonus initiative provides financial relief to female players while raising the tournament’s profile by rewarding exceptional performances.”

The initiative is designed to drive motivation, foster professionalism, and promote long-term investment in women’s football.

Raquel Puig, Head of CSR and Sports Development at betPawa, emphasised the company’s commitment to development in African sport.

“At betPawa, we believe in investing in talent and development across Africa. The Locker Room Bonus is more than sponsorship, it’s a commitment to rewarding women in sport and giving football the visibility it deserves. We’re proud to drive this transformative change alongside FKF.”

Defending champions Ulinzi Starlets, who have claimed the title in 2021, 2023, and 2024, will begin their campaign against TUK Ravens. Last year, Ulinzi beat Kibera Soccer Women 2-1 in the final at Police Sacco Stadium.

Police Bullets, who finished third, will open their campaign against Thika Starlets.

Ulinzi coach Collins Ochieng is optimistic about defending the title, citing the added motivation provided by the new bonus system.

“The players are motivated by the prospect of earning after each win. As a coach, my goal is to win the title again.”
