Gor Mahia have booked their place in the final of this year’s Mozzart Bet Cup after edging out Murang’a Seal 5-3 on penalties in a dramatic semi-final clash at Dandora Stadium in Nairobi on Sunday.

The closely contested match ended 2-2 in regular time, forcing a shootout where Gor Mahia held their nerve to progress.

The victory keeps alive their ambition of reclaiming the Mozzart Bet Cup title, which they last won in 2021.

Murang’a Seal took an early lead through Michael Owen’s sixth-minute rebound. However, Gor Mahia came back stronger in the second half, and their efforts paid off in the 57th minute when Bryson Wangai leveled the score with a well-timed header.

Six minutes later, Gor took the lead through a brilliant long-range strike by Alpha Onyango. Despite maintaining control for much of the half, K’Ogalo were unable to hold on to their advantage, with Wilson Kamau equalising for Murang’a Seal—forcing the match into a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Onyango, Enock Morrison, goalkeeper Gad Mathews, captain Philemon Otieno, and Austin Odhiambo all converted their penalties for Gor Mahia.

On the other side, captain John Kiplangat, Michael Owen, and Dennis Munyovi were on target for Murang’a Seal, but Humphrey Obina missed his attempt, handing Gor a 5-3 win.

“I thank my players for showing a strong character in the match after we conceded,” said Gor Mahia’s interim coach Zedekiah Otieno.

“We have a good team and we know what to do in the next round. What is important is for us to maintain the strong character. It (the final) will be a tough game but we will be ready,” he added.

Murang’a Seal coach Yusuf Chipo expressed pride in his players despite the loss.

“It was a good match and the results are not bad. Drawing with Gor Mahia is not easy. We relaxed in the second half, and Gor were on top of things after making changes. Penalties have no favourites,” said Chipo.

He noted that the team will now shift its focus to the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL), where they are battling to avoid relegation. Murang’a Seal currently sit 17th in the league standings with 33 points.

Their final two matches of the season are against Mara Sugar and FC Talanta—games that will be critical in determining their top-flight survival.

“I’m confident we will remain in the league (FKF-PL),” added Chipo.
