Newly crowned Kenya's 2024 Sports Women's Team of the Year, the Junior Starlets, will be looking to show their mettle when they take on continental giants Cameroon on Sunday in the first leg of their third round Fifa U-17 Women's World Cup qualifier.
Kick-off is at 3pm at the Nyayo Stadium, with the return leg taking place in Yaoundé on Friday.
The young starlets may be basking in the glow of their accolade and that of their coach Mildred Cheche, who was named the 2024 Coach of the Year at the Sports Personality of the Year gala at the KICC in Nairobi on Thursday night, but they face a tall order in beating the West African favourites.
The winners of the tie will qualify for the global event in Morocco from October 16 to November 3.
Cheche led Kenya U-17 to their maiden World Cup in the Dominican Republic last October, finishing third in Group C with three points.
Cameroon, coached by Joseph Ndoko, were due to arrive in Nairobi on an Ethiopian Airlines flight on Saturday at 1:15am.
They thrashed Egypt 6-0 in the first round before beating Ethiopia 6-2 on aggregate in the second round.
The two-time African U-17 champions (2016, 2018) have made two World Cup appearances.
Kenya and Cameroon have never met at this level.
