What you need to know:

  • Amahwa had been fronted by a section of club members to run for the seat in the elections slated for June 29, 2025.
  • At the same time, club secretary general Gilbert Andugu has also confirmed that he will not defend his seat.

Former AFC Leopards Rescue Team chairman, Maurice Amahwa will not contest the chairmanship seta in the forthcoming club elections.

Amahwa had been fronted by a section of club members to run for the seat in the elections slated for June 29, 2025.

But Mr Amahwa has now said he will not be contesting any seat in the polls. However, he promised to continue supporting the club.

“I have been a supporter of AFC Leopards since the club was formed in 1964. I’m available to the club should they need my assistance,” said Amahwa who once served as the club’s Mombasa branch chairman.

Race for the top seat

Amahwa also expressed gratitude to the club members who saw him fit to run for the seat.

“I request the members to vote wisely and elect officials who can salvage the club. We need a chairman who is committed and can make huge sacrifices for the club. We also need somebody with muscles to turn the club round,” he said.

Amahwa contested the seat in 2026 but lost controversially to Dan Mule.

Also out of the race for the top seat are current treasurer Oliver Napali and U-45 branch chairman Olympia Musonye. The two had initially indicated that they would be contest the seat.

Subsequently, the club’s chairmanship race has now been reduced to three candidates, namely Boniface Ambani, Ronald Namai and Enos Mutokah.

Hotly-contested affair

At the same time, club secretary general Gilbert Andugu has also confirmed that he will not defend his seat. Andugu cited personal reasons for his decision.

The secretary general’s seat has attracted seven candidates, including human resource and administration expert Asava Kadima, in what promises to be a hotly-contested affair.

Kadima previously served as an assistant secretary general before replacing George Aladwa who resigned in 2011 to serve as Mayor of Nairobi.

Other candidates eyeing the seat are Isaac Mulindi, club supporter Robert Situma, Newton Lime, Jesse Asutsa Tetei, Wycliffe Nyamu and Dennis Esikuri Njeka.
