‘Left us peacefully this morning’: McDonald Mariga confirms mother Mildred Barasa's death

McDonald Mariga, the vice president of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and brother of Victor Wanyama, is mourning the death of his mother, Mildred Barasa.
Football Kenya Federation Vice President McDonald Mariga has announced the death of his mother Mildred Barasa.
Mr Mariga, the brother of professional football star Victor Wanyama —who has previously played for Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League before moving to Major League Soccer Montreal Impact and later Scottish lower league side Dunfermline Athletic — revealed that their mother died in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, who left us peacefully today morning. We are currently making arrangements and will share more details soon! Thank you, " Mr Mariga, who also played professional football for top Italian clubs Parma and Inter Milan before retirement, announced on social media.
He did not disclose the cause of death but promised to provide further details on funeral arrangements.
Mariga’s father, Noah Wanyama, was also a football legend, who played for Kenyan side AFC Leopards. The family also has several children involved in various sports at the top level.
The Nation understands that the family has started holding meetings Saturday morning and will settle on a spokesperson who is expected to be briefing the public on their plans.
Users of the social media site X (formerly Twitter) also shared condolences messages with the family following the announcement by Mariga.
