Royal Nairobi Golf Club’s John Lejirmah continues to set the pace in this season’s Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series.

Popularly known as “Samburu One,” Lejirmah successfully defended his Goldfields Trophy title at the par 72 Kakamega Sports Club course over the weekend.

Meanwhile, a newly acquired TaylorMade Qi10 Max driver—currently retailing at Sh98,283—worked wonders for victory-hungry Johana Cheptoo during the Minet Kenya Golf Tournament held over the weekend at the nine-hole Eldoret Golf Club.

At Kakamega Sports Club, Lejirmah fired a superb five-under-par 67 in the third and final round on Sunday to close on a seven-under-par total of 209 gross—despite having shot a two-over-par 74 on Saturday.

“It feels amazing, especially having to come back to successfully defend my title. I have been on a good run recently. The fairways are apparently OK, though the greens are a bit challenging. Hopefully, I’ll keep the streak alive heading to Limuru. I have never won there, except a second-place finish, though I will give it my best this time around,” said Lejirmah.

This marked his sixth victory in the 2025 KAGC series from nine events played so far. The win earned him Sh115,000 (before tax) and 165 points, extending his lead in the KAGC Order of Merit to 1,720 points—a comfortable 657 points ahead of closest challenger and series defending champion, Michael Karanga of Ndumberi Golf Club.

Karanga did not travel to Kakamega for the weekend tournament and remains second with 1,063 points. Another Ndumberi player, Elvis Muigua, who tied for sixth in Kakamega, holds third place with 795 points after picking up 29 points.

Back at the leaderboard, Lejirmah’s margin of victory was emphatic—nine shots ahead of Golf Park’s Sammy Mulama, who carded his second level-par 72 of the event to finish second on two-over-par 218, one shot ahead of home player Cedric Konzolo.

Among the lady golfers, only two made the second-round cut. Vipingo Ridge’s Naomi Wafula finished 10th overall on nine-over-par 225, while Faith Chemutai came in 16th.

The KAGC series now shifts focus to the Limuru Open and Brackenhurst Open, scheduled from July 4 to 6.

At Ruiru Sports Club, Njoro Country Club’s Mercy Nyanchama clinched her second title in the Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) Golfer of the Year series, firing a solid round of one-over-par 74 to claim the Ruiru Ladies Open title against a strong field. This was despite three-putting the 16th and 17th holes.

In the Minet Kenya Golf Tournament, Cheptoo, who had last claimed a divisional prize over a year ago, said the new driver played a key role in his breakthrough win. He delivered an impressive round of 41 stableford points to clinch the title.
