Dar es Salaam. Tanzania's amateur boxing team will launch the country's quest for medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games today when three boxers step into the ring at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow.
The official draw has handed Tanzania challenging opening bouts against opponents from Nigeria, Zambia and Lesotho as the boxing competition gets underway.
The tournament runs from today to August 1 and features 201 boxers, comprising 131 men and 70 women, representing 43 Commonwealth nations across 14 weight categories.
Leading Tanzania's campaign in the men's light heavyweight (80kg) division is Yusuf Changalawe, who will face Nigeria's Ankintola David in the round of 32.
Fellow Tanzanian Faki Issa Faki will also begin his challenge in the men's bantamweight (55kg) round of 32 against Zambia's Mwengo Mwale. The country's biggest early medal hope, however, could come from Zawadi Kutaka, popularly known as the Tanzanite Queen.
The featherweight (57kg) boxer has already advanced directly to the quarterfinals after receiving a bye, making her just one victory away from guaranteeing herself a place in the medal rounds. She will take on a boxer from Lesotho in her opening contest.
Kutaka has already made history by becoming the first Tanzanian woman to represent the country in boxing at the Commonwealth Games, adding further significance to her appearance in Glasgow.
The boxing competition opens on today with preliminary round contests before progressing through the knockout stages, with quarterfinals scheduled for July 29, semifinals on July 31 and medal bouts on August 1. Besides boxing, Tanzania is represented in three other sports at the Games.
Athletics will provide the country's largest contingent, with six runners expected to begin competition when track and field events start on Monday, July 27, at Scotstoun Stadium.
The nation will also be represented by two judokas, whose events are scheduled from July 31 to August 2 at the SEC, while swimmer Collins Saliboko will compete in the swimming program at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, where races begin today.
Tanzania is hoping its small but determined delegation can produce strong performances against some of the Commonwealth's leading sporting nations, with the boxers carrying the country's first realistic opportunity to challenge for medals in the opening days of the Games.
