Nation Media Group CEO Geoffrey Odundo has called for stronger collaboration between the co-operatives sector and the media.

He urged Savings and Credit Co-operative Societies (Saccos) to mobilise resources and support local content production for media visibility.

“We can co-create impactful solutions. Co-operatives play a critical role and must be seen and heard because they are at the heart of economic transformation,” said Mr Odundo.

He spoke in Mombasa on Wednesday during the 20th Annual National Co-operatives CEOs Workshop.

Mr Odundo urged players in the co-operatives sector to embrace technology to boost their businesses and attract more clients.

He cited weak governance structures, slow digital adoption, and generational disconnects in leadership as persistent challenges facing the sector.

However, he noted that there are turning points such as strategic investment in technology and inclusive leadership that are already reshaping the landscape.

“Leadership isn’t easy; it demands intentionality, the ability to see the big picture, and above all, high integrity. Leaders must be communicators who take their people along on the journey of transformation," Mr Odundo added.

This year's event is focusing on navigating current economic challenges and building a resilient, inclusive future.

More than 100 chief executives and industry players from Kenya’s co-operative sector gathered in Mombasa for the meeting.

Mr Odundo urged the leaders to focus on attracting Gen Z into their spaces.

To paint a picture of possibilities in the digital transformation, he offered a sweeping view of Kenya’s media evolution and its role in shaping national dialogue.

He traced NMG’s history from traditional broadcasting to its current digital first model, unveiling new platforms and products developed in line with changing audience needs.

“We’re not just a media house, we are a platform for national development. Through events like the Nation Leadership Forum and strategic partnerships, we continue to create spaces where business, policy and citizens converge,” he said.

Mr Vincent Marangu, the Co-operatives Banking division director at the Co-operative Bank of Kenya, lauded the NMG chief executive for his impactful career in the financial sector.

He said there is a great future for the media and co-operatives.
