Draw against Vihiga leaves Kenya Police title defence in limbo

What you need to know:

  • The law enforcers will play Trinity Starlets in Nakuru, while the soldiers host Kisumu Allstarlets in Nairobi on May 25.
  • Speaking after Sunday’s league match, Vihiga Queens coach Boniface Nyamuhnyamu said they executed their game plan but failed to convert chances.

A barren draw against Vihiga Queens at the Kenya School of Government Grounds in Nairobi on Sunday has left Kenya Police Bullets’ defence of the Football Kenya Federation Women Premier League (FKF-WPL) title in ruins.

With one match to go, the draw leaves the team with 43 points at the top of the table in 20 matches, but this may prove inadequate for them to win the title.

Their fate now depends on ruling  by FKF regarding a complaint filed by Ulinzi Starlets against Zetech Sparks. Ulinzi claim Zetech Sparks fielded an ineligible player in their 2-2 draw in the second leg match of the league played at Ruaraka Grounds in Nairobi on March 8 this year.

Speaking to Nation Sport on Sunday, Ulinzi Starlets coach Collins Oduor said his team alerted FKF about the incident, and played the match under protest.

“We wrote to FKF and informed them that Zetech had fielded a player who was active in the system for another club. We await the result of the investigations,” said Oduor.

If FKF rules in favour of Starlets and awards them two points, they will be on 41 points in second place, taking the title race to the final match of the season. Should Zetech win the case, they will be added  two more points, and Police will be champions.

The law enforcers will play Trinity Starlets in Nakuru, while the soldiers host Kisumu Allstarlets in Nairobi on May 25.

Speaking after Sunday’s league match, Vihiga Queens coach Boniface Nyamuhnyamu said they executed their game plan but failed to convert chances.

“Mathematically, we are out of the race and focus on the FKF Women’s Cup this weekend. Like Arsenal, we will try again next season,” noted Nyamuhnyamu, who has won four league titles with the club.

Bullets assistant coach Lawrence Suji acknowledged that a slow start affected their game. “We are very optimistic we will lift the title. The title race is very tight, showing the growth of women’s football.”

In another match, Sparks’ midfielders Beverline Adikas’ goal in the second half against Kibera Soccer was enough to give them maximum points at Zetech University, Mang’u Campus Grounds.

Debutants Mombasa Olympic and Bunyore Starlets, who are in 10th and 11th on the log, have been relegated even after playing to a 1-1 draw at Makande Primary School in Mombasa. Wadadia Women was the first team to be relegated at the beginning of the second leg.

Bullets striker Rebecca Okearo tops the top scorers chart with 14 goals in 20 matches, with Bungoma’s Catherine Khaemba and Joy Kinglady Oriyo in second place with 12 goals each.
